Greenville wealth management advisor awarded $15,000 grant from Northwestern Mutual

Celebrating the philanthropic work of its financial advisors, Northwestern Mutual is recognizing the individuals who have shown outstanding volunteerism and leadership through its 2023 Community Service Awards. Now in its 28th year, the awards program is distributing $270,000 to nonprofits nationwide. Greenville resident Hughes Schwartz, a wealth management advisor at Northwestern Mutual – Greenville, has been named a 2023 Community Service Award winner, receiving a $15,000 grant for The Family Effect.

“Northwestern Mutual is a company built on helping people, and it is inspiring to see the impact that these financial advisors are making on their communities through selfless contributions,” said Steve Radke, president of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. “I’m honored to work alongside these dedicated advisors who embody our company’s values and commitment to the communities we serve.”

The Family Effect is a nonprofit organization that raises funds for the Phoenix Center, an agency that provides quality treatment services to help prevent family collapse and harm to children caused by addiction. Approximately 15,000 individuals are served each year through the work of The Family Effect across Greenville County as they seek to heal from substance use disorder. Schwartz supports multiple areas of the organization by fulfilling governance responsibilities and duties, fundraising in the community, attending and serving as a volunteer at special events and participating in committee meetings to plan and obtain sponsors for special events.

“So many people struggle with substance abuse, including a close friend of mine whose life was personally impacted and forever changed by the devastation of drug abuse,” said Schwartz. “The grant money will help to support mothers and children in need of clinical treatment through The Family Effect’s program that is designed to heal a mother’s addiction, accelerate a child’s development, build long-term skills for family strength and self-sufficiency and reintegrate the family into society as a healed unit.”

Since the program’s inception in 1995, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation has donated nearly $7 million to nonprofits across the country. In celebrating the volunteer work of its financial advisors, the company deepens its dedication to giving back to the communities it serves.
